The Big Suprise of the 3rd Workshop
May 13th, 2008 Posted in Joey | No Comments »On the day of our third workshop i didn’t know what to expect. When everyone arrived we were met by Mrs S. She first told us that we were going to need to market our videos to the community and we were getting more time for that. She then gave us a crash coarse in marketing with the the example of us being the chairs salesman trying to sell her chairs. When that was finishied she laid on our big suprise. We all randomly chose a local business to job shadow! I was so excited because it was the first opportunity that i got to actually experience taking the role of what i feel is a real apprentice. I chose El Lago, in my opinion it was the perfect choice because the owner is great! Toedisia was so nice and she kept me entertained the whole time I working there. She assigned me to greeting the customers, seating, and giving them their menus. After I sat the customers I did a little undercover work. I asked each customer the same three questions, ” How often do you come here”, ” What’s the driving factor that keeps you coming back the restaurant”, and ” on a scale of 1-10 what do you rate the restaurant”. I was very surprised to find that almost all of the costomers go to the restaurant once or twice a week, they love the food, the service, the hospitality of the owner, and I didn’t get one rating lower than an 8. In my opinion that’s a great acheivment for a business in Zion, Illinios. Those results were what I expected from a restaruant like Olive Garden. I t was a great experience interacting with the customers and not to mention that i got a free breakfast burrito! This experience was amazing and I say this because I got a chance to really get to know the owner. The owner really inspired me because she told me all of the things that she had to deal with and one of them was dealing with the homeless people coming in to the restauraunt begging for food. Her situation was tough with one particular custumer because when he had money(someone loaned it to him) and he was drunk or high, she told him that she would not serve him because of his condition. She explained to him that she would only serve him if he was sober and drug free. This hard to do especially seeing how bad that this person’s life is. Turning down a homeless person that has money to pay for his meal is a heart wreching decision that not many people can make. She also taught me about what it’s like owning a business, which something that I always wanted to know. I’m very excited for the marketing project and I’m glad I got to be a part of the El Lago staff.
